Preschool Yoga Storytime – Shapes

This storytime went pretty well. But afterwards I left thinking, I need a more exciting theme next time. They enjoyed shapes for the most part but it did not excite them.

Welcome Song: Hello Friends

Breathing Activity (Prayanama):Triangle and Square Breathing

(from: Coping Skills for Kids)

Partner Poses:Twinkle Star

Toddlers take star pose with arms and legs spread out wide and while parents help them rock their star from one foot to the other foot and sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

Stick to the Glue song

Stomping feet, one and two
Stomping feet, one and two
But if my feet were covered in glue
I’d stick to the glue, my darling.
Clapping hands, one and two
Clapping hands, one and two
But if my hands were covered in glue
I’d stick to the glue, my darling
(hands in Anjali mudra, or prayer position) (from yogibrarian)

Hello Stretch/Sun Salutations

Book:Triangle by Mac Barnett

Yoga re-telling of book

  1. Poses:
    1. Triangle: Downward Dog
    2. Square: Tabletop
    3. “Running” in between (walk legs, crawl, bear crawl, etc)

When I Stretch Up Rhyme

When I stretch up, I feel so tall. (Reach high)
When I bend down, I feel so small. (Bend over)
Taller, taller, taller, taller. (Reach up high and higher.)
Smaller, smaller, smaller, smaller. (Get low on the floor.)
Into a tiny ball. (Sit down.)

Open the Book Stretch

Start seated with arms stretched out in front of you, palms touching. To “open the book,” stretch the arms wide. To close it, bring them back together. To “turn the page,” open just the right arm and close it, then the left arm and close it. Repeat “turning pages” until the kids giggle. Repeat the whole sequence using legs instead of arms. Then try arms and legs together. (from yogibrarian)

Book:Shape by Shape by Suse MacDonald

  1. Poses:
    1. Circle in Mountain Pose
    2. Back Draw Game (Draw shapes on caregivers back and have them try to guess the shape, then switch and have shapes drawn on your back and try to guess!)

Relax Poses:Butterfly Pose, Child’s Pose

Rest/Savasana:

Imagine you are on a soft white fluffy cloud, what is the shape of the cloud? Relax all body parts. Fox wakes you up if he thinks you really fell asleep (gets kids to lay still :)) Option of putting a beanbag on their belly to feel their breathing.

Goodbye Rhyme: Peace begins with Me

Hold both hands overhead. On the word “peace,” touch the thumbs and pinky fingers together. On the word “begins,” touch the thumbs and ring fingers. On the word “with,” touch the thumbs and middle fingers. On the word “me,” touch the thumbs and pointers. Repeat this four times, the first time loudly and hands overhead. The second time, bring the hands down a little and speak a little softer. The third time, bring hands lower and whisper. The last time, bring hands to knees and speak words silently to self.
